Organ Donation Awareness

Up until Josh's death, organ donation wasn't something we had really thought about.  We are originally from England and carried an organ donor card in the UK, but we never thought that we would need to make a decision regarding our own son.  It has only been since then that we have researched and found out more about the donation process and the chronic lack of donors.

There is a great quote which says “Transplants not only save lives, they recapture productive lives.”  That is so true.  Many people know the difference that having a transplant means to their lives.  Life-altering is very probably an understatement.

On June 4, 2009, Josh went for his operation and his organs went on to help save the lives of six people. He donated his heart, liver, pancreas, lungs, and both kidneys.

Knowing that Josh’s generous gifts of life has enabled his recipients to have a second chance of life gives us such comfort.  Josh lives on.

During national organ and tissue donation awareness week of 2010, we were lucky enough to be part of a giant living green ribbon on the school field at East Elgin Secondary School, Aylmer, Ontario, with 952 people.  August 20, 2010 would have been Josh’s 19th birthday. On this day, close friends organized and sold personalized organ donation car magnets.
